Date:2021-04-16 16:35:00

On April 9, Gao Yunlong, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and chairman of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC), met with Pansy Ho, vice chairman and secretary-general of the Global Tourism Economy Forum (GTEF), to exchange views on strengthening the brand of the GTEF, promoting the Mainland-Macao cultural and tourism exchanges and cooperation, and facilitating the recovery and development of the world tourism economy.

Gao pointed out that over the years Macao had been aiming at developing itself into a world tourism and leisure center, and had won a unique position in the development of the world tourism economy. The GTEF has been supporting and promoting the economic diversification of the Macao Special Administrative Region and the sustainable development of the world tourism economy. It also has made positive contributions towards connecting China with the governments and industries of other countries and promoting the investment cooperation in the global tourism industry. In 2020, the 9th GTEF was successfully held both online and offline for the first time in active response to the impact of COVID-19, which has achieved good results in taking advantage of innovative technology to boost the confidence of the global tourism industry in development.

According to Gao, since the 18th Communist Party of China (CPC) National Congress, Chinese President Xi Jinping has put forward a people-oriented development philosophy and made a series of remarks on ensuring and improving people’s livelihood. Xi pointed out that we must grasp the aspirations of the people to live a better life, and strive to achieve the people-centered development step by step with the new development philosophy guiding the way, so as to realize common prosperity for everyone and all-round social progress. The tourism industry carries the people’s yearning for a better life. The ACFIC will continue to support the GTEF and hoped that the GTEF could take its 10th anniversary as an opportunity to adhere to the open, inclusive, civilized and modern thinking, seriously reflect on the previous experience and shortcomings, put forward new goals and visions for the new era, further innovate its mechanism, and continue to strengthen its brand effect. The GTEF is also hoped to play a bigger role in promoting Macao’s integration into the overall national development plan, boosting global confidence in Macao’s tourism industry, and facilitating the sustainable development of the global tourism industry.

Pansy Ho first conveyed greetings from Edmund Ho Hau Wah, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and chairman of GTEF, and thanked ACFIC Chairman Gao Yunlong for attending the 9th GTEF online and delivering a speech. According to Pansy Ho, the COVID-19 pandemic caused an unprecedented impact upon the tourism industry around the world in 2020, bringing both domestic and international travel to a standstill from March onwards. The number of tourists visiting Macao dropped by more than 85%, exerting a severe impact on Macao’s economy. Against this backdrop, the government of the Macao Special Administrative Region still provided strong support for the 9th edition of GTEF, which reached more than 50 regions around the world with more than 420,000 guests, speakers and audience breaking the boundaries of time and geography through the use of technology to truly connect globally. Pansy Ho said that in accordance with Gao’s instructions, she would earnestly summarize previous experience, work with Macao tourism industry to proactively integrate into the overall national development plan by playing its leading role in the cooperation in culture, tourism and other fields. In order to serve Macao, national economic development and the innovative development of global tourism, she will deepen cultural and tourism exchanges and cooperation between the mainland and Macao and between the mainland and the world, strengthen the brand effect and international reputation of the Forum, and tell China’s stories well. In the end, she sincerely invited Gao Yunlong to attend the 10th GTEF in Macao when the pandemic is under control.

The meeting was also attended by Qiu Xiaoping, vice chairman of ACFIC, Ma Jun, director of the communication department of ACFIC, Ji Xiaodong, chairman of China Chamber of Tourism (CCT), and Wang Ping, director-general of CCT.
