Sponsored by China Environment Chamber of Commerce (CECC), and co-organized by China Trade and Munich Exhibition (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and Chengdu Environment Investment Group Co., Ltd., The 3rd IE expo Chengdu & 2021 China Ecological Environment Industry Summit Forum was held in Chengdu recently with the theme of “Linking and Resetting: New Industrial Forces under the Vision of Carbon Neutrality”.

Xie Jingrong, vice president of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC), Cao Junjie, vice-mayor of Chengdu, Li Gao, director general of the climate change department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Peng Yong, deputy director of the ecology and environment department of Sichuan Province, Zhao Lijun, president of CECC and chairman of Poten Enviro, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Attendees also included Chen Fang, vice chairman of ACFIC, vice chairman of the CPPCC of Sichuan Province and chairman of the provincial federation of industry and commerce, Dai Yingli, Consul of the German Consulate General in Chengdu, and about 500 heads of environment chambers and commerce and enterprises from all over the country. The opening ceremony was presided over by Zhao Yu, vice chairman of Sichuan Federation of Industry and Commerce.

At the opening ceremony, Cao Junjie said that Chengdu had always attached great importance to ecological environmental protection, and had been strongly promoting the “three controls and one greening”, in order to create market demand for environmental industry. In 2020, the output value of low-carbon industry in Chengdu reached 62.2 billion yuan, making Chengdu an important bearer of green low-carbon industry in western China. Green and low-carbon development is becoming the most distinctive trait and advantage of Chengdu. Enterprises are hoped to contribute more to the construction of Chengdu as a model park city area based on the new development concept.

Xie Jingrong pointed out that, since the whole country was studying the spirit of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s speech on July 1, the CECC and private enterprises were expected to further unify their thoughts and actions, enhance the political consciousness of listening to the Party and following the Party, and make greater contributions to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The goal of “hitting peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060” has put forward higher requirements for China’s industrial structure, energy structure, production methods and lifestyles, and has provided broader development prospects for environmental service enterprises. He hoped that the CECC would firmly grasp the theme of “two healthy (the healthy development of the private sector and personnel engaged in the sector)” in its future work, give full play to its advantages in resource gathering, and continue to build platforms between enterprises and government, between enterprises and society, and between enterprises and enterprises in the five areas of organization building, think tank building, platform building, international cooperation and brand building. It should also actively carry out research on major policies and topics in the field of ecology and environment to serve scientific and technological progress and institutional innovation, effectively perform the role of government’s assistant, industry’s promoter and enterprises’ helper, lead and promote environmental enterprises to increase investment in scientific and technological innovation, continuously deepen international cooperation, tell well the story of achieving carbon neutrality in China, and contribute wisdom and strength to achieving carbon neutrality. He also called on society to create a fairer and more relaxed business environment for enterprises of different sizes and ownerships, especially for environmental protection enterprises.

Li Gao said that in 2020, the output value of China’s low-carbon environmental protection industry reached 7.5 trillion yuan, with an average annual growth rate of more than 15% from 2015 to 2020, much higher than the economic growth rate in the same period, which was a new bright spot and new force in China’s economic development. He hoped that environmental enterprises could grasp the new opportunities, take on their responsibilities and strive for innovation to fight the battle of pollution prevention and control, and to achieve the national “twin carbon” goals. He also hoped that Sichuan Province and Chengdu would continue to step up efforts to protect the ecological environment and respond to climate change, improve the quality of the ecological environment, and take the lead in the “twin carbon” work.

Centring on topics such as environmental industry and the achievement of “twin carbon” goals, the forum aimed to broaden horizons, inspire thoughts and encourage enterprises to contribute to the sustainable and healthy development of the environmental industry and low-carbon development of the economic society, according to Zhao Lijun. As a national industry organization, the CECC will continue to hold high the market-oriented banner, support market-oriented reform, help the industry to become bigger and stronger, help cultivate more vital and creative enterprises, serve the high-quality development of the industry, actively promote the deep integration of green low-carbon and ecological protection, promote the formation of internal driving force for sustainable development, and seek sustainable development together.

After the opening ceremony, presided over by Luo Jianhua, vice chairman and chief environmental policy expert of CECC, a keynote speech on “From Energy Revolution to Ecological Civilization: Explore the Road to Achieve Carbon Neutrality in Chengdu” was given by Lei Xianzhang, academician of the German Academy of Engineering, distinguished expert of the National Thousand Talents Program, chief scientist in the field of carbon neutrality at Southwest Petroleum University, chairman of the China (Germany) R&D Innovation Alliance, and chairman of the European Hydrogen Energy Fuel Cell Council. He Kebin, deputy director of the Ecological Environment Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and a Changjiang scholar, shared with the audience his opinions on “The Challenges and Industrial Opportunities of Environmental Science and Technology under the Goal of Carbon Neutrality by Reducing Pollution and Carbon Emission”.

Focusing on “twin carbon” goals, pollution prevention and control, the construction of Chengdu-Chongqing twin-city economic circle and other key issues, the event held several activities, including the China Ecological Environment Industry Summit Forum, 2021 China’s Top 50 Environmental Enterprises Release, the 3rd IE expo Chengdu, the ground-breaking ceremony of the National Environmental Protection Motor Vehicle Pollution Control and Simulation Key Laboratory (Chengdu) Base Project, 2021 Chengdu Ecological Environment and Health Conference, and the 2021 China-Japan (Chengdu) Environmental International Symposium.
